AI data centers set to consume 3% of world’s electricity

Artificial intelligence is fueling an unprecedented surge in global data center energy use, raising alarms among experts about a looming electricity crunch.

According to the International Energy Agency, data centers could consume as much as 3 percent of the world’s total electricity by 2030, a sharp increase from current levels and double the share used just five years ago.

The driving force behind this spike is the rapid expansion of AI, which depends on colossal computational muscle to train and run ever-larger models.

Each new generation of deep learning systems requires more powerful chips and denser server farms, a reality that is pushing the boundaries of current energy infrastructure.

A Race to Reduce Consumption

Global consulting firms warn that the industry must either significantly increase the world’s energy supply or improve efficiency at every layer of AI deployment.

Companies are now racing to find solutions that stretch from the chips themselves to the data center’s walls.

Hardware makers are introducing specialized AI chips designed to deliver more computing power per watt.

At the same time, researchers are focusing on clever programming that can optimize tasks and cut waste, sometimes reducing energy use by up to 30 percent.

Cooling systems, once as power-hungry as the servers, have become a major frontier. The shift to liquid cooling and AI-driven temperature controls is helping some facilities manage intense heat loads without the need for energy-draining air conditioning.

Amazon Web Services, among others, is already deploying these new approaches at scale.

Some observers point to the competitive stakes of AI research. Countries and corporations are increasingly treating access to reliable, abundant energy as a key ingredient for maintaining global leadership.

The United States and China, for example, are both eyeing next-generation grids and even unconventional sources such as nuclear power to fuel their AI ambitions.
