A Russian-speaking threat actor, codenamed ScopeCreep by OpenAI, used ChatGPT to refine a Go-based malware designed to infiltrate Windows systems. The malware, distributed through a fake overlay tool for video games on a public code repository, functioned as a loader to deliver additional malicious payloads.
These payloads were engineered to escalate privileges, evade detection, and steal sensitive data like credentials and browser cookies. ScopeCreep’s operators demonstrated advanced operational security by using temporary email accounts for single-use interactions with ChatGPT, making their activities difficult to trace.
The malware employed Base64 encoding, DLL side-loading, and SOCKS5 proxies to mask its origins and used PowerShell to disable Windows Defender protections. OpenAI noted the group sought assistance with debugging Go codes, integrating Telegram APIs, and modifying antivirus settings via PowerShell.
Chinese Hacking Groups Target AI for Espionage
Two Chinese state-linked hacking groups, ATP5 and APT28, also known by aliases like Keyhole Panda and Nylon Typhoon, were among the banned accounts. These groups leveraged ChatGPT for open-source intelligence gathering, software development, and infrastructure setup.
