Ford has issued a major recall affecting nearly 274,000 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs in the U.S. due to a critical brake issue that could lead to braking function loss, heightening the risk of crashes.
The recall, announced on May 15, 2025, targets vehicles from the 2022 to 2024 model years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a potential manufacturing defect may cause the front brake lines to rub against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, resulting in brake fluid leaks or complete brake failure.
While Ford estimates only 1% of the recalled vehicles are affected, the company has received 45 warranty reports of front brake line leaks as of April 17, 2025. Ford has not linked the issue to any accidents or injuries, but the recall highlights the company's proactive approach to addressing safety concerns.

Scope and Impact of the Recall
The recall encompasses 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators. Affected drivers may notice increased brake pedal travel, requiring harder presses to stop the vehicle, or an illuminated red brake warning light indicating low brake fluid levels.
Recent online discussions highlight growing driver concerns about brake reliability in large SUVs, with some owners reporting similar issues in non-recalled models. Ford’s recall aligns with heightened scrutiny on automotive safety, as regulators push for stricter oversight of manufacturing defects.

To address the issue, Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake lines of affected vehicles and replace them or the air cleaner outlet pipe if needed, at no cost to owners. Dealer notifications commenced on May 14, 2025, and Ford plans to mail owner letters between May 26 and May 30.
