Google’s Pixel 10 series is breaking new ground, becoming the first smartphones to allow WhatsApp voice and video calls via satellite connectivity. Starting August 28, users will gain the ability to make and receive calls even in areas with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

This innovation marks a major leap in mobile communications, expanding the role of satellite connections from simple SOS messages to practical, daily use. Google confirmed the partnership with Meta’s WhatsApp, leveraging advanced NTN (non-terrestrial network) technologies.

Groundbreaking Partnership Sets New Standard

Pixel 10’s new feature launches alongside the device itself. The phones come equipped with satellite-compatible hardware, allowing voice and video calls on WhatsApp with just a clear view of the sky.

The partnership positions Google ahead of rivals, while Samsung and Apple currently focus on satellite messaging restricted to emergency-only functionality.

Most competitors offer only basic satellite texting, but Pixel 10 moves beyond emergencies. A demonstration from Google shows the satellite icon appearing during an incoming WhatsApp call with no cell signal necessary.

Did you know?
Google’s satellite calling technology for WhatsApp is powered by non-terrestrial networks (NTN) developed in partnership with Skylo, and it’s the first mainstream consumer use of satellite voice and video on a commercial app.

How Satellite Calling Works in Practice

Calls require participation from specific carriers and may involve extra fees, details that Google says will become clear as the rollout commences. Users need to be outdoors for a solid satellite link, and latency could introduce some delays compared to cellular networks.

WhatsApp’s calling over satellite is separate from Google Messages’ own satellite text features. While technical challenges remain, Pixel 10 promises optimized performance thanks to Tensor chip advancements and its work with satellite provider Skylo.

Expanding Reach and Market Strategy

Google’s move could help WhatsApp gain traction in markets where it faces strong rivals like iMessage. The feature will be available across all Pixel 10 models, including the Pro XL and Pro Fold variants.

T-Mobile, working with Starlink, will support early access, with features like Google Maps and Find Hub also benefiting from enhanced satellite data starting August 28.

Samsung and other brands may soon follow, but for now Google leads, aiming to make satellite connectivity part of everyday life, not just a backup in emergencies.

Forward-Looking Implications

The Pixel 10’s revolutionary satellite calling may set new standards. As partnerships deepen and more apps adopt satellite networks, mainstream smartphone connectivity could expand beyond today’s limits.

Advanced codecs and low Earth orbit satellites promise reduced latency and improved quality, making the wilderness a little less disconnected.
