Google’s latest AI Mode update brings a new era of searching and studying. Users can now upload files, use the Canvas planner, and get real-time help all right inside the familiar Search window.
The upgrade targets anyone who needs to organize or go deeper into learning, providing smarter support for everything from classwork to research projects.
Unlocking Smarter Planning with Canvas
The new Canvas feature lives as a persistent side panel in Search. By hitting “Create Canvas,” users can build, edit, and refine plans or study guides over several sessions. Each prompt or note stays accessible, perfect for returning to big projects or coursework without losing progress.
Canvas isn’t just a scratchpad. Refine the content by asking follow-up questions, integrating more AI suggestions, or preparing custom workflows for everything from test review to business proposals.
Did you know?
Google Canvas lets users refine and organize AI-generated projects across multiple sessions, making learning and planning far more interactive than traditional search.
Powerful File Uploads: PDFs, Images, and More
Do you have a complex PDF or image set for your class? Now, you can upload these directly to desktop AI mode and interrogate their contents with natural-language questions. Google’s AI will not only summarize but also connect information from your files to the latest web context.
This means you can absorb slideshows, notes, or even images, then deepen your understanding through conversational follow-ups. Support for Google Drive files and more formats is expected later this year.

Search Live Brings Real-Time, Visual Help
Search Live weaves Project Astra’s visual smarts into Google’s AI Mode. Using your phone or desktop camera, you can ask the AI questions about anything you point at: diagrams, objects, or even a math problem on paper.
The AI processes the input, discusses tricky ideas, and provides instant answers, bridging physical and digital worlds. This feature makes Google Search more interactive for students, families, and professionals.
Learning and Productivity Redefined
The new AI mode is made for repeat visits. Session-based canvases keep ideas and study plans organized, while uploads and visual search mean faster, deeper learning. The days of fragmented notes and lost tabs are fading as AI Mode brings these tools to everyday use.
Desktop and mobile users will see features roll out over the next few weeks, with Labs experimenters in the US and select markets seeing early access first. As AI Mode expands, expect more file support and even smoother integration.
AI Mode’s Canvas and upload upgrades mark a leap forward, making Google Search not just a place for answers but a true workspace for thinking, planning, and discovery.
