Microsoft Copilot is on a mission to make digital conversations feel less robotic and more like natural dialogue. The latest experimental feature, called “Copilot Appearance,” now introduces a real-time animated avatar for voice-based chats.
This new avatar can display expressions, smiles, and nods, moving the experience far beyond simple chatbot replies. The visual update is currently live for select users in the US, UK, and Canada as part of an early preview program through Copilot Labs.
Animated Avatars Add Life to Voice AI
Unlike text answers or audio-only bots, Copilot’s animated “marshmallow blob’ avatar is designed to respond with human-like gestures and facial changes. From synchronizing smiles with your greeting to nodding during explanations, the AI aims to mimic the subtle cues of real conversation.
The feature works only in voice mode. Users simply enable Voice via the microphone icon, then activate Appearance through Voice settings. Once switched on, saying “Hi” wakes the avatar, its face reacting in real time as the AI listens and replies. This visual channel helps bridge gaps that text or monotone voices often leave.

How the Real-Time Expressions Work
Microsoft’s technical leap comes from combining natural language processing, computer vision, and advanced animation. As the AI interprets your words, it also analyzes emotional tone and intent, picking facial expressions that match the mood of the conversation.
Processing all the information in real time, the system swaps between smiles, eyebrow raises, and nods with barely noticeable lag. It’s a major improvement over the static digital faces or simplified emoticons that have been common in past chatbot UIs.
Building on Psychology-Informed Design
Developing an avatar that doesn't appear artificial necessitates input that extends beyond the expertise of software coders. Behavioral psychologists and UX researchers helped shape a library of authentic expressions, so the avatar can display warmth, understanding, curiosity, and even surprise.
Microsoft also borrowed technologies first used in Teams avatars and fused them with Azure’s industrial-strength AI and animation stack, maximizing realism in every twitch and grin. Early feedback shows users are more likely to trust and understand Copilot’s answers when emotional cues are present.

The expressive avatar is just the first visible stage on this journey, aiming for AI entities that grow, adapt, and emotionally connect rather than remaining static utilities.
The Marshmallow Blob: Approachable but Smart
Why choose a marshmallow blob? Microsoft wanted something friendly, universal, and non-corporate. The result, a pastel-toned, soft-edged, emoji-inspired creature, feels approachable and non-threatening, inviting trust instead of unease.
Its shape can flex, squish, and exaggerate expressions while retaining a calm, central ‘face.’ This playfulness, informed by gaming avatars and modern emoji sets, helps mainstream users accept a visual AI presence without recalling the intrusive avatars of computing’s past.
Limited Access Expansion Ahead?
Currently, the Copilot Appearance feature is only available for select accounts as Microsoft studies user reactions and fine-tunes emotional accuracy. There’s no timeline yet for widespread rollout, but feedback from the preview will play a major role in shaping future AI avatars.
The drive to create relatable AI is only growing; expect Copilot and its competitors to get even more expressive, context-aware, and tuned in to the nuances of human emotion in the months ahead.
