Speaking at the company’s Redmond, Washington headquarters on May 18, 2025, ahead of the annual Build conference in Seattle, Scott outlined Microsoft’s ambitious plans to advance AI development.

The Build conference, starting May 19, is expected to showcase new tools for developers crafting AI systems, with a focus on interoperability and memory enhancement for AI agent systems designed to autonomously perform tasks like debugging software.

Fostering Collaboration Through Open Standards

Microsoft is championing the adoption of industry-wide standards to enable AI agents from different providers to work together. Scott highlighted the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source initiative from Anthropic, as a key technology.

MCP could create an “agentic web,” akin to the internet’s growth in the 1990s driven by hypertext protocols. This vision allows developers’ creativity to shape AI ecosystems, rather than limiting innovation to a few dominant players.
