North Korean Defector’s Lawsuit Targets Kim Jong Un for Crimes Against Humanity

Choi Min-kyung, a North Korean defector now living in South Korea, is set to file both civil and criminal complaints against Kim Jong Un and four senior officials, including members of the Ministry of State Security.

The lawsuits, to be submitted in Seoul, allege grave human rights violations under international criminal law, including sexual abuse, torture, and other inhumane treatment during Choi’s detention after her forced repatriation in 2008.

This marks the first time a North Korea-born human rights victim has taken direct legal action against the regime’s leadership.
