Tesla’s long-awaited arrival in India saw the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai, yet the moment many had dreamed about was tinged with disappointment for the company’s earliest local supporters.
For years, Model 3 reservation holders hoped to be at the forefront of Tesla’s entry, but reality fell well short of expectations. In 2016, hundreds of Indian customers placed $1,000 deposits to pre-book a Model 3 with faith in Elon Musk’s promise of an Indian launch.
Nine years later, many still have not driven their promised cars, and some only regained their money after repeated efforts and lengthy delays, often with little or no communication from Tesla.
Launch Without Fanfare or Familiar Faces
When Tesla finally opened its Mumbai showroom in July 2025, early reservation holders were notably absent from any special events.
Despite their advocacy and years-long support, none received priority invites or recognition, a stark contrast to the excitement generated by other major brand debuts, such as Apple’s, in the same location.
Instead, some of these early supporters arrived not to purchase a Tesla but to reflect on what could have been. Many had moved on, opting for rival electric vehicles after years of waiting and refund frustrations.
Did you know?
India’s premium car market, where Tesla’s Model Y competes, accounts for only about 1% of total car sales, yet EVs are quickly gaining market share within that elite segment.
Disenchanted Early Backers
For some, the process of securing a refund sparked more bitterness than the initial delay. Public criticism drew responses from dozens of like-minded reservation holders facing similar struggles.
According to supporters, the lack of communication left them disconnected from the brand they once championed.
“It’s frustrating to wait a decade, try to support a brand, and receive nothing but silence,” remarked Arun Bhatt of Tesla Club India. The club itself has shifted its focus from pure Tesla fandom to broader interest in EVs and clean energy, reflecting the growing ambivalence among formerly ardent Tesla followers.

Premium Price Meets New Competition
Tesla’s Model Y debut in India comes at a steep price of ₹59.89 lakh (about $68,000), almost 50% higher than the US retail price.
The vehicle is imported from China and enters a crowded premium electric car segment, where rivals like Audi, BMW, and Tata already have a strong presence.
Industry analysts note that Tesla’s late entry and high price may limit its market impact, especially when longstanding enthusiasts now voice skepticism or shift their loyalty.
Unanswered Questions on Service and Charging
Key practical concerns also linger. Tesla has yet to clarify its after-sales support or outline a robust Supercharger network, making some potential buyers cautious.
For many original reservation holders, the excitement surrounding Tesla has long faded, replaced by a cautious, wait-and-see approach as the brand resets its reputation with a new wave of Indian consumers.
Nine years after their initial vote of confidence, many of these early adopters are still waiting, not for a car, but for a reason to believe in Tesla’s promise again.
