Ukraine is dramatically expanding its use of remote-controlled combat robots, with plans to field 15,000 of these machines on the battlefield by the end of 2025. This surge highlights a heavy reliance on technological innovation to address entrenched manpower shortages and growing battlefield dangers as the war with Russia grinds on into a fourth year.

The new generation of small Ukrainian robotic vehicles, often tracked or wheeled and painted in camouflage, are built domestically and cost from $1,000 to $64,000 each.

Operated by soldiers from safe positions, they are seen delivering supplies, clearing mines, and evacuating wounded troops from active firefights where sending people poses severe risks.

Ukraine’s armed forces are under relentless manpower pressure, with some brigades reportedly operating at just 30 percent strength due to casualties and widespread desertion.

In one recent mission, a team used a robot to deliver 200 kilograms of supplies across several kilometers, showing how logistics can be maintained even when roads are targeted or blocked. With ongoing development, the robots’ tasks and capabilities are set to expand further.

Despite their promise, Ukraine’s ground robots face several hurdles. They move slowly (about 6 km/h), making them easy targets if spotted, while Russian electronic warfare frequently disrupts their communications. Loss of signal can leave valuable robots stranded or destroyed.

To adapt, Ukrainian engineers and crews are adding protective metal cages and mine rollers and improving nighttime operations to avoid detection. Continuous upgrades and rapid field modification are now standard procedures to increase survivability and mission rates.
