What new tech powers Poland’s upgraded F-16V Block 72 jets?

Poland’s decision to modernize its 48 F-16C/D Block 52+ fighters to the F-16V Block 72 standard marks one of the most advanced fighter upgrade programs in Europe. This $3.8 billion investment delivers a host of next-generation technologies that bring the fleet in line with modern combat requirements.

These enhancements, developed under a U.S.-backed defense agreement, extend each jet’s service life, dramatically improve its situational awareness, and enable full interoperability with Poland’s incoming F-35A fleet and NATO allies.

Advanced AESA radar and sensors

The AN/APG-83 SABR AESA radar allows pilots to track both air and ground targets at the same time and create detailed maps. Its technology lineage comes from the F-35’s radar, allowing Poland’s upgraded F-16s to detect threats at longer ranges and in varied conditions.

This radar improves targeting precision and supports advanced ammunition types while enhancing battlefield awareness, a critical upgrade for operations in contested airspace.

The Block 72 brings a digital electronic warfare suite with radar warning receivers and automated countermeasure deployment systems. Combined with the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System, it significantly reduces the chance of aircraft loss in both combat and peacetime operations.

Upgrades also boost protection against emerging electronic threats, a key factor in a region with increasing air defense sophistication.

Expanded weapons compatibility and endurance

The jets will be compatible with advanced NATO munitions such as the AIM-9X, AIM-120D AMRAAM, AGM-158 JASSM, and GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb II. This flexibility allows Poland to engage a broader range of targets with greater accuracy.

The F-16V Block 72, equipped with improvements that enable 12,000 flight hours and optional fuel tanks designed to fit its shape, can fly longer distances without losing performance, which is crucial for both deterring threats and carrying out missions.
