The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has challenged established AI data barriers. With its new Storage.AI project, the industry group is directly addressing the latency, power, and cost issues that plague today's AI workloads.
Fifteen of the world’s biggest technology players have joined SNIA’s open-standards push. Large enterprises and startups alike are grappling with data bottlenecks; now, major rivals are aligning around vendor-neutral solutions.
Industry Heavyweights Back an Open Approach
SNIA’s Storage.AI counts AMD, Cisco, DDN, Dell, IBM, Intel, KIOXIA, Microchip, Micron, NetApp, Pure Storage, Samsung, Seagate, Solidigm, and WEKA as founding members. They represent the breadth of the storage and compute sector, from chipmakers to enterprise storage leaders.
These stakeholders see latency, power usage, and cost inefficiencies as major drags on AI’s future growth. By developing shared standards, Storage.AI aims to offer end-to-end improvements in data flow, giving companies the tools to deploy AI at scale without the penalties of slowdowns or runaway expenses.

Tackling the GPU Data Bottleneck
AI accelerators such as GPUs are only as fast as the data streams feeding them. Traditionally, storage had to pass through layers of CPU memory, introducing delays and increasing energy usage. Storage.AI targets this issue with a six-pronged technology effort.
Key areas include Accelerator-Initiated Storage IO, Compute-Near-Memory, Flexible Data Placement, GPU Direct Bypass, a new NVM Programming Model, and a Smart Data Accelerator Interface.
These approaches are designed to move data closer to the accelerators and allow more efficient, direct access, cutting out the usual bottlenecks.
A Broader Coalition, But One Big Missing Piece
While most major tech players have signed on, Nvidia is notably absent. As the current king of AI accelerators, Nvidia’s proprietary GPU Direct architecture is a linchpin in many high-end systems. The open "GPU Direct Bypass" standards championed by Storage.AI seems poised to compete directly, potentially shifting market dynamics.
Dr. J. Metz, the chair of SNIA, bluntly stated that no single company can solve these challenges alone. The hope is that by collaborating with groups like NVM Express, the Open Compute Project, and SPEC, Storage.AI can attract adoption beyond the founding members and possibly, eventually, Nvidia itself.
